About Daniel Saperstein
I am Associate General Counsel & Chief Labor Counsel at NYU. In my role, I provide legal advice and counsel to NYU's undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, colleges, institutes, centers, units, and sites across the globe. My practice areas include labor relations and union matters; employment counseling and litigation; campus safety; faculty matters; student affairs; benefits; and immigration.Before joining NYU, I was an Associate for about six years in the Labor & Employment Law Department at Proskauer. There, I served as Co-Chair of the Hiring & Background Checks Group, and as a member of several other practice groups. While at Proskauer, I litigated a wide range of cases, and counseled numerous employers across many industries. I also drafted congressional testimony, contributed to several books, was quoted in U.S. Supreme Court briefing papers, penned commentaries for law/HR journals and major media outlets (including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Star Ledger, Record, and Bloomberg), and otherwise authored and was cited in hundreds of articles. During my legal career, I have been named a "New Leader of the Bar" by the New Jersey Law Journal, a “Rising Star” by New Jersey Super Lawyers, a "Top Author" by JD Supra, and an "Above and Beyond Partner" by NYU HR. I also received recognition for my pro bono contributions, including for my animal rights work on behalf of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.For years, I have been a recurring Guest Lecturer for the graduate course, Higher Education and the Law, at NYU. I also have spoken at a number of conferences, workshops, and seminars on labor and employment law.Prior to my legal career, I was an Adjunct Professor of History at two New Jersey-based colleges. Over the years, I have written on various historical topics, as well as current issues ranging from global citizenship, to liberal democracy, to climate change education. I hold a B.S. from NYU, an M.A. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and a J.D. from Fordham University's School of Law.

As Co-Chair of the Hiring & Background Checks Group, advised employers on recruiting and hiring issues arising in the U.S., as well as in countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia.• Drafted congressional testimony; edited a number of books; authored and cited in hundreds of articles; wrote commentaries for major media outlets, trade publications, and law reviews; quoted in U.S. Supreme Court briefing papers, treatises, newspapers, magazines, academic journals, and bar/business association materials; and frequently spoke at employment law conferences and seminars.• On the pro bono front, submitted comments, on behalf of ALDF, to the FWS and NIH to strengthen protection for captive chimpanzees in the U.S., as well as to the USDA to strengthen protection for captive bears in the U.S. and to otherwise restrict animal experimentation. Also worked on the Iraqi Human Rights Project; partook in Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses; represented NYPD; assisted on prisoners' rights issues; and filed an amicus brief before the NJ Supreme Court.
