In 1992, Dan founded the Municipal Finance Group at Societe Generale. He served as Managing Director in charge of that group until his departure in 2007, building it into one of the most successful municipal finance groups on Wall Street and overseeing a $15 billion portfolio of bonds, swaps, options, loans, and letters of credit.

Dan joined the Public Finance department at Smith Barney after graduating Columbia Business School. He worked in the Short-Term Finance Group, focusing on variable rate debt. He participated in the founding of the interest rate swap group, where he structured and marketed interest rate hedges for municipal clients.

Dan worked as an economist in the research department of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, supporting visiting scholars with whom he co-authored a number of research papers.
