I obtained my PhD in the Molecular Materials department of the Radboud University, where I worked on functional crosslinks in synthetic biomimetic hydrogels based on polyisocyanopeptide polymers. During my PhD I supervised several students during their research internships, and I tutored undergraduate students during problem sessions and laboratory courses. My thesis manuscript was submitted in February 2018 and accepted in April 2018. I graduated in September 2018.

I tutored undergraduate students in the practical and theoretical aspects of organic and analytical chemistry, as well as in the theoretical aspects of microscopic techniques. I also trained high school students in developing their practical skills in the chemical laboratory.

During my internship at the Molecular Materials research group, under supervision of Professor A.E. Rowan, I worked on the design, synthesis and characterization of fluorescent probes for liquid crystal alignment studies. Liquid crystals are widely applied in for example LCD screens and optical devices. For these devices to work correctly, detailed knowledge of and control over the liquid crystalline order is required. I have designed, synthesized and characterized a novel kind of dye, based on the well-known BODIPY molecule, that can align with the order in a liquid crystalline system. With this dye I was able to characterize the liquid crystalline order in this system. The synthesis of this dye has been published in ChemistryOpen (2016).As a part of this internship I wrote a literature thesis about liquid crystals for use in optical devices, wherein I focussed on, among other things, the use of Blue Phases for improvement of LC display technology.

During my internship in the research group of Professor G.J. Hutchings, I worked on the selective hydrogenation of lactic acid to propylene glycol using a heterogeneous ruthenium catalyst. Propylene glycol is a key chemical with many applications in for example biofuels and food conservation. The current production of this compound is highly dependent on the petrol industry. As the Earths oil reserves are diminishing, a 'green' alternative for the production of propylene glycol is highly demanded. I have contributed to the development an eco-friendly pathway for the production of propylene glycol, using the widely available lactic acid as starting material. The results of this research have been published in ACS Catalysis (2015).
