Visiting students was the largest part of the role.I staffed a drop-in desk for two hours a week, on my own or with other members of my team, where I developed my customer service abilities. This desk allowed any student living in university accommodation to speak to a Residence Mentor about any issues they might be going through. My team and I walk around the accommodations, at night, listening for noise disturbances and making sure nobody is in distress. We also take calls from the security team, asking us to attend incidents. Working closely with other accommodation teams, gave me a good understanding of the interplay of different departments in a large organisation.I log in detail every interaction I have with residents at the end of each shift, so my line manager knows what I have been doing and can follow up on any specific visits I did/ problems I dealt with. The role also involved assisting at events, such as open days, as well as creating and coordinating events for my own students. I seek out opportunities, and took extra training in study skills, so I was able to better help students with academic issues.I received multiple nominations for the ACS Residence Mentor of the Year award and finished the job with an ‘Outstanding Residence Mentor’ HEAR award.
