I am a subject matter expert in demand forecasting for electricity networks. Since late 2011 I have led the development and production of Ausgrid’s maximum demand forecasting process. During this time, under my stewardship and against a backdrop of ever-increasing scrutiny by external stakeholders, the forecasting process has evolved from a simplistic methodology utilising dated software and manual processes, to a detailed and robust methodology comprising around a dozen individual components, all rigorously researched and modelled, and now delivered around 6 months earlier than before, allowing more time for Ausgrid to develop network plans and to prepare for the critical summer months each year. I consider demand forecasting a highly challenging, yet ever-evolving role, where my mathematical, analytical, programming, influencing and management skills are tested on a daily basis in a role where there are no procedures or work instructions to guide you in your job. Demand forecasting is even more important today as the electricity industry grapples with the rapid emergence of distributed energy resource technologies such as rooftop PV, battery storage and electric vehicles. I am well-versed in wide range of statistical and machine learning modelling techniques, and have successfully implemented robust methodologies for weather normalisation, econometric modelling and probabilistic assessment techniques in my tenure as Demand Forecasting Manager. In partnership with Ausgrid’s IT department, my team has developed a bespoke forecasting software platform in SAS in 2013, and still used today, which is a leading maximum demand forecasting solution for distribution networks within the National Electricity Market.
