About Daniel Chen
Having been at Grab for 10 years, I've had the privilege of being at the forefront of many of Grab’s efforts to drive Southeast Asia forward, alongside passionate Grabbers and nurturing leaders.2014: We were a startup helping passengers and taxi drivers connect. Small improvements made a big difference in the booking experience. As a hungry intern, I was tasked with integrating Singapore’s postal codes and Taxi Stand numbers into our system, simplifying pickup and drop-off location searches. I also helped roll out cashless bookings in Singapore.2016: Competition was heating up, and we formed alliances with ride-hailing companies globally. My team and I integrated with Lyft to enable cross-border ride-hailing. We flew to the US, collaborating with Lyft during the day and Grab at night. It was exhausting but incredibly rewarding.2017: Driver-partners were waiting too long for payments, and disbursements were manual. Working with Design, Engineering, and Business teammates, we integrated with banks and launched instant cashout in Indonesia. Today, those same payment rails are used for merchant settlements as well.2018: E-wallets were booming, and payments required regulatory compliance. Without licenses, we partnered with local e-wallet providers. Over the next two years, I led integrations to launch GrabPay regionally and built the wallet platform to manage balances for Consumers, Driver-Partners, and Merchants.2019: As Ride Hailing and Food Delivery grew, so did card payments volume. I took over the GrabLink product team, focusing on cost reduction. We migrated cards to our own PCI-compliant vault and routed transactions to the cheapest and most available acquirers.2021: To serve 1 in 2 everyday entrepreneurs, I transitioned to the Merchant product team, leading Onboarding, Reporting, and Store Operations.2023: I moved to the Fulfillment product team, where I’m responsible for using technology to solve Grab's fulfillment challenges by enabling fleet partners. These diverse experiences have sharpened my ability to solve real user problems, foster cross-functional collaboration, and drive innovation across domains.

Daniel Chen work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Senior Product Management Leader, Fulfilment (Fleets)
Current
Head Of Product, Merchants (Onboarding, Reporting & Store Operations)
Head Of Product, Payments (Grablink)
- In 2015 (see below), we launched cashless payments for rides with the help of 3rd-party payment gateways.- 5 years later in 2020, we built our own in-house payment gateway, with a PCI-compliant card token vault, and integrated with acquirers and schemes across Southeast Asia.
Senior Product Management Leader, Payments (Wallet Platform)
- Stepping deeper into the Payments space, my team and I integrated with and launched e-wallets, together with our local partners- The product was simple, but given the regulations, execution was very challenging. But we did it, one after another.
Lead Product Manager, Payments (Driver Payouts)
- Integrated with banks regionally, to enable instant or same-day cash-out, for driver-partners where cashflow is very important- The same rails were later on used for merchants- With the social and scalability impact, this is my proudest achievement in Grab
Product Manager
- Owned our internal tool that is used company-wide, for managing bookings, passengers, drivers and promotions.- I also integrated with Lyft to allow Grab and Lyft to be used interchangeably in SEA and in US. See: https://www.grab.com/sg/press/business/sea-u-s-travelers-ride-across-borders-grab-lyft-integration/- As a first-time PM, I didn't create much impact at this stage of my career, other than keeping the ship running. However, I learnt a lot of our internal systems that later on enabled me to become a highly effective PM in the new areas, as the company grew.
Business Analyst
- Continued to support the Singapore office with its data needs- Continued to act as liaison and project coordinator between Singapore and Malaysia's Regional Tech Team. Helped to launch cashless payments in Singapore.
Analytics Intern
- Find insights from Singapore's bookings data for Singapore leadership to uncover opportunities. E.g. showing where areas were severely short on driver-partners during peak hours.- With Singapore office still nascent and absent with technical expertise, be the go-to guy interfacing with the regional tech team in Malaysia.- Launched the introduction of postal codes and taxi stand numbers in the Grab app to help passengers search for their pickup / drop-off quickly.- Check out my story here: https://grab.careers/6-years-at-grab-daniels-journey-from-intern-to-head-of-product/
