About Daniel Tizzard-Close
As well as my duties as a Kairahi at the National Army Museum of New Zealand, I provide highly popular and engaging interactive history classes for schools in Auckland, designed to engage students and teachers alike. This programme has used my own private collection of artefacts and reproductions and has operated successfully for nine years. This collection contains items of extreme rarity which require appropriate storage and display practices. This programme specialises in explaining technology and historical politics in an easy-to-understand manner for all age levels. An example of this success was explaining the nature of financial inflation to intermediate-level students and finding them able to not only recall but also understand and question the content over a week later. As the Reenactor Representative for the Armistice in Cambridge Event Committee, I represent the interests of at least six different historical reenactment groups portraying different nations, time periods and military units. This not only requires me to represent their concerns but also organise battle plans, coordinate health and safety, delegate organisation of campsites and their locations but also requires me to facilitate negotiations between groups with opposing opinions as well as security and appropriate display of historical artefacts including firearms, vehicles, artillery and political symbology. I also volunteer as a historical reenactor within multiple groups and frequently am called upon to engage with the public, either as a reenactor or as a collector at numerous public events throughout the year. As former secretary of the WW2 Historical Re-enactment Society, my role focused on ensuring the society was represented at events and was advertised to relevant organisations and potential future members as well as ensuring regulations were enforced. The role also called for looking after new recruits and ensuring that they knew which members to go to for relevant information prior to training sessions.Collaboration and relationship building with other historical societies and groups was also a major part of the role, ensuring cooperation at events both public and private. As a committee member of the Antique and Historical Arms Association, the role was largely based on being able to create networks between members, collectors, dealers and other interested parties. Those networks, whilst not as well used since my moving to Waiouru, are still alive and well as evidenced by interactions at events.
