About Daniel Urul
Experienced researcher with proven training in protein biochemistry, redox biology, and methods development. I received my PhD in Chemical Biology from Cornell in 2020; as an NSF GRFP fellow, I worked to optimize and expand techniques to identify and characterize novel redox-sensing proteins, from mammalian cell models to application in live C. elegans. My experience as technical assistant to a blind computational chemistry scientist and as a visiting researcher at EPFL in Switzerland further honed my skills in scientific communication and collaboration.

Senior R&D Scientist
Current
Phd Graduate Student
- As an NSF GRFP fellow, my doctoral work focused on the adaptation and expansion of proteomic profiling techniques to identify endogenous reactive electrophilic species (RES) sensors in C. elegans. By utilizing novel.
- Adapted a novel toolset for interrogating redox-sensing functionality of target proteins (T-REX) for in vivo utilization in C. elegans (ACS Biochemistry 2018; Current Protocols in Chemical Biology 2018)
- Worked to expand the REX toolset in C. elegans into a platform for interrogating the redox-sensing cysteinome (Methods in Enzymology 2019; +1 manuscript in preparation)
- Characterized redox modification and signaling functionality in newly identified RES-sensor proteins (ACS Chemical Biology 2018; +1 manuscript in preparation)
Graduate Teaching Assistant
- Directed practical laboratory sessions, graded reports and exams, and held office hour discussions for undergraduate students.
- Fall 2016: Chemical Biology – Proctor and grader for problem sets and exams of a class of ~20 students.
- Spring 2016: Organic Chemistry Lab – Conducted 2 weekly lab sections, held office hours, and proctored/graded lab practicals and written exams.
- Fall 2015: General Chemistry Lab – Conducted 2 weekly lab sections, held office hours, and graded exams/assignments.
Visiting Phd Graduate Student
- Continued graduate work with Prof. Yimon Aye as a visiting researcher in Lausanne, Switzerland, during the Aye Lab's transition from Cornell to EPFL.
- Facilitated transfer of our group's C. elegans material and associated laboratory setup, as well as our fluorescent stereomicroscopy equipment, as part of the Aye Lab's overseas relocation.
- Collaborated with several EPFL-affiliated groups while re-establishing and refining our group's C. elegans research program.
- Mentored an MS-level EPFL student in C. elegans handling and experimental techniques, as well as associated chemical biology protocols, culminating in essential contributions to a current manuscript in preparation
Technical Reader/Assistant
Assisted a blind graduate student in the Merz computational biochemistry group (affiliated with the UF Quantum Theory Project) in various roles, including document reading/writing, molecular visualization, and clerical work. During this time, I gained experience with basic bioinformatics methodology and computational biology principles.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Under the direction of Professor Steven Bruner, I conducted structural analysis of novel proteins through fusion protein engineering, site-specific mutagenesis, diffusion crystallography, and computational structural prediction.
