Daniel Van Zyl Email and Phone Number
When I tell people I work in AI, I usually get one of three responses:1. "Oh no, don't do that - AI is going to take over the world!"2. The more rational: "Oh no, don't do that - AI is replacing people's jobs!"3. And more frequently: "Oh great, another one..."Even if they don't say it outright, I can usually tell by the way they react with their eyes. The third response is a recent addition, and honestly, it’s a bit annoying. When I used to tell people I wanted to work in AI, they at least thought it was pretty cool. Now it seems like everyone’s working in AI.But it’s the second response that keeps me up at night - mostly because they're probably right.I’d love to say AI will be different from every other technological revolution, but it probably won’t be -especially if those who already hold all the money and power are the ones exploiting it at everyone else's expense. Perhaps it's even worse with AI, because there are some real opportunities to empower people with it.Years ago, when I asked myself what I could work on to make the most significant difference, the answer was AI. Now, with the explosion of GenAI and who knows what's next, I still believe I was right. I've been on this journey for a few years now - a bit of studying, researching, and innovating - and I'm starting to feel like I'm getting pretty good at this whole AI thing. You can read more about it on the rest of my page if you like. But for now, I’ll keep doing my part to use AI to make as much of a difference for those who need it as I can.So yeah. I build cool stuff with AI. Sometimes it even works.

Research AssistantCeri - Centre For Epidemic Response And Innovation Dec 2023 - PresentStellenbosch, Western Cape, South AfricaStaying on at Stellenbosch for another year wasn't ever part of 'the plan' really. But there are some opportunities that are just to good to pass up. Back when I saw the advert for the position, I knew CERI was one of the best research facilities, especially what with Tulio running it and all. But truly, the research-idea something that I thought could do some real good. Plus, it never hurts that I'm getting paid this time. The short of it: I'm researching the use of machine learning to classify strains of viral genomic sequences as a (much) quicker alternative to the alignment-based phylogenetic inference currently used. We're aiming for three publications, so watch this space. -
