My duties included screening and approaching parents of NICU babies, conducting detailed medical chart reviews (for both mothers and infants), preparing and submitting ethics applications and amendments, preparing for monitoring and auditing by regulatory authorities, reporting complex adverse and serious adverse events, designing and implementing official CRFs, as well as liaising with physicians, fellows, respiratory therapists and hospital administrators for the purposes of conducting safe and effective research. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the research team for over 10 studies, both regulated and non-regulated by Health Canada, ranging from phases 1 to 4. These were often very large data sets requiring very precise manipulations. As well, these experiments were often preceded and followed by extensive literature examinations, which taught me to search through massive collections of past research and filter out the most relevant information.
