Our business unit did not have a permanent Business Analyst. The leadership team approached me to fulfil this function within the space. I would be required to fulfil the function for 12 months which would serve as a business case for upper management. This business case would be used to justify a fulltime BA role in our business unit.I was tasked with looking for and implementing efficiency gains across the 8 teams in the business unit

I was accepted into the internal rotation programme within Allan Gray. I spent three months within this team to gain some insights into how leadership and development are approached on a company level. This was a position that was out of my comfort zone, however leadership has always been something that interests me. As this was only a three-month rotation most of my time was spent learning and observing the processes within the space which proved valuable on a personal level. As always, I was able to do some work on additional side projects which hopefully added some value to the space as well.

The main function of this team was to ensure the correct tax reporting of our clients to SARS. There is a lot that goes into this function but in short, we would ensure that the correct tax directives were applied for on client instructions and that tax certificates for clients were generated and submitted to SARS correctly on an annual and biannual basis.In this team I further developed my reporting skills and worked with members of the team to re-design our investigations process which enabled me to build a new more efficient tool for our tax investigations.This team offered general tax support to the business and any and all queries that could not be answered by our client facing teams were sent to our team for assistanceBy this stage of my career, it had become the norm for me to take on ad hoc project work to try and create efficiencies in our team or add value to our stakeholders.

This team had a number of roles and responsibilities. First and foremost, it operated as an internal controls team for all Life Products. We would ensure that any instructions processed on Life Products which were unsuccessful, were attended to and corrected. Any instructions which failed due to system issues or human errors were picked up in this team and corrected accordingly. We were also responsible for correcting any internally identified errors, these differ from failed instructions in that the instruction went through the system correctly however was processed incorrectly. We would be notified of this and needed to make the necessary corrections on the account.Our team had a number of reports which we ran on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. The stakeholders for these reports varied greatly ranging from line managers to the board of trustees. This is where I first started developing a passion for data and began building reports of my own.In addition to these responsibilities, we would occasionally take on ad hoc projects which were of a much larger scale, affecting multiple teams and often hundreds of clients.

I was based in the Life and Retirement space where I processed instructions relating to Retirement annuity, Pension/Provident Preservation and Living Annuity Funds. These instructions included: new investments, debit orders, fund switches and transfers to name a few. The only instructions I did not deal with were the exits from Allan Gray.I acted as a Client and Financial Advisor Liaison and provided general client servicing on all instructions received.
