Manufacturing Engineering Intern
-Manufacturing-Roles associated with the manufacturing included the operation of an industrial laser, CNC mill, and CNC router. I was tasked with cutting and engraving various materials types such as HDPE, granite, aluminum sheets, and aluminum bars. -Quality Assurance-All of the manufacturing was done according to strict design parameters to ensure the best quality and accuracy for the final product. If a quality issue was identified I was then tasked with immediately identifying trouble areas in the manufacturing process and establishing countermeasures to eliminate future defects. -Machine Assembly-Assembly of the FDM 3D printers was done in accordance with a specified set of criteria. All of the components of the printer were to be properly assembled in order to ensure the best printing quality. This meant that all of the fasteners, cables, sensors, joints, servos motors, and guide rails went through quality inspection.-Testing/Troubleshooting-All printers went through a period of testing in preparation for the consumers. During this time, filament of varying compositions were tested such as PLA, TPU, Nylon, etc. The printers were then tested by printing designs of different geometries. On occasion, printers would fail and I would perform a diagnostics and repair on the machine. This could include the adjustment of the proportional-integral-derivative control algorithm or something as simple as tensioning the drive belts.-Manufacturing Process Optimization-In order to increase the productivity and efficiency of the manufacturing processes, I systematically created a layout that decreased travel time. This optimized layout improved workflow efficiency and capitalized on the autonomy of CNC machines so the time between cycles could be used more efficiently on other tasks. The manufacturing processes were then documented and uploaded into a learning system for future use.
