Profile bio

About Daniel Williams

I've been working as a Scrum Master in the software development arena for the past 7 years, and I have a previous 6 years of experience working in the software development industry in various project management type roles. I've always looked to improve processes and make efficiency savings, and early in my career I found my ideas aligning with Agile methodologies.I have a passion for inspiring others and for making tasks as simple as possible without compromising quality. As a relative newcomer to the Agile movement, I feel that my fresh look into these principles allows me to evaluate many pre-existing processes and identify where these can be modified or adapted to fit the needs of modern businesses.I'm a firm believer in development teams being afforded full autonomy in order to build products and services from the bottom-up. These engineers are employed for their expertise in specialist fields and it is a crying shame that most aren't afforded the freedom to excel and meet their potential, mainly due to prescriptive processes and management structures.

Listed skills include Agile Methodologies, Scrum, Kanban, Servant Leadership, and 16 others.

In 2018 LGIM took an ambitious decision to create an integrated investment management and client portfolio platform. Rather than creating something new, the aim was to leverage the existing investments in technology and people and enhance with new functionality to create a single cohesive platform. Nexus is a 21st century, scalable solution that manages investments, IT and data demand centrally. It is not a project, it is an integrated “Solutions” platform underpinned by a suite of shared services and data infrastructure. Setup as an enduring Agile value stream with sustained investment, Nexus is fundamentally transforming the way Legal and General Investment Management operates.A permanent team was created with colleagues from LGIM Investment (led by Michael Kovacs in Chicago) and LGIM Technology (lead by Stuart Campbell in London). Scrum teams use Agile working methodologies enabling functional enhancements and features to be deployed rapidly and frequently, quickly delivering value to our clients. Nexus is set up in a flexible structure meaning quarterly pivots on priorities can be handled with minimal disruption. Working across four core domains (Control, Portfolio Management, Data and Risk Analytics) the team have already delivered a number of solutions. The combined team is an integral part of the Investments team and has dual reporting lines into both the Chief Investment Officer and Chief Digital & Technology Officer. The blueprint for the next stage of the Nexus development programme has just been cut with build due to start in Q3. Nexus will be cutting-edge, cloud-native, built for now and tomorrow as our first truly global, dashboard-driven, scalable platform with a consistent-user experience from any office across the globe.

Scrum Master

Cardiff, United Kingdom

My role was created to help transition an existing internal IT department into a successful stand-alone software company. I coached 3 teams to follow agile methodologies from developing monolithic legacy systems in a very waterfall fashion, along with coaching 3 Product Owners, and the executive level. The team previously received prescribed workloads and solution, worked in isolation of each other with no collaboration with other developers, and minimal manual testing processes carried out by a separate QA function. I evolved this into separate agile workstreams working in both scrum and kanban processes, with QA involvement throughout the SDLC. I was also involved in hiring key engineers to help drive growth from within the teams.I pushed the teams to be self-organising and self-facilitating, and to embrace autonomy and empowerment, which has increased the ownership and responsibility taken of the work being developed. The teams excelled in effective planning and estimating, and backlog management with the Product Owners. I helped them develop their sprint reviews to be able to be delivered to both peers and stakeholders, with the value delivered being the primary focus.I placed a large emphasis on improving processes, making efficiency savings and general application of lean principles. I advocated root cause analysis and long term solution for bugs and repetitive tasks, and automation of tasks wherever possible. I also encouraged celebrating successes and learnings, and drove creation and communication of company vision, strategy and values. I advocated collaborative work wherever possible, and the teams now consistently work together daily in some form or mobbing, grouping, pairing or whiteboard design sessions, evolving into lunch and learn sessions and lightning talks. This all had huge improvements on the people side of the development teams, as previously there was little motivation, enthusiasm, ownership or pride in anything delivered.

Scrum Master

Scrum Master to four development teams utilising Scrum, Kanban and Lean processes. Enabled clear improvements in delivery commitments and capacity planning for Sprints by identifying and tracking hidden tasks, and developing roadmaps for all teams to evolve toward predictive velocities. Championed allowing teams autonomy and freedom to be self-managing, also encouraged “leading from behind” and including teams in all aspects of project planning to gain bottom-up perspectives. Supported use of pair-programming and mobbing to improve collaboration, productivity and quality. Key Achievements:• Migration of all services from IBM Bluemix infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform• Involved in setting up many demonstrations and enhancements of the platform which led to the signing of the first customer• Opened platform to allow self-serve capabilities for external development teams• Managed the migration of legacy time-logging to new corporate system following takeover• Championed AV and comms equipment overhaul to support mobbing and other collaboration
