I joined the Global TIES One Village Philippines (OVP) team as a way to connect with my heritage, learn practical skills, and give back to a community. The team is partnered with Gawad Kalinga (GK), a NGO in the Philippines that is dedicated to uplifting communities from poverty. The OVP team seeks to cocreate an enterprise on the GK Enchanted Farm in Bulacan around building low cost, high utility solar powered lanterns. I was involved in the OVP project as a student for 4 consecutive quarters. I started on the business sub team, then served as the construction lead, the testing lead, and quality control lead. in the summer of 2018, I was lucky enough to travel to the Enchanted village and learn about how the folks live on the Farm. Our team taught a workshop on how to build out lantern to over 50 of the villagers. Seeing the lanterns light up the room was magical. After that Summer trip, I continued on in Global TIES as an undergraduate advisor. I oversaw the students on OVP as they continue progress with the enterprise & lantern design. I also advised the Baja de Sol project, which operates with orphanages in Tijuana, Mexico. The Baja project seeks to reduce operating costs for orphanages by implementing solar water heating. The project also gave the science and engineering demos to pique their intellectual curiosity.
