Wecis Head Of Group

Widnes

The responsibilities of this role are to oversee and direct the management and administration of the Group, ensuring high engineering, safety and ship husbandry standards are upheld; as well as to plan, control and assess equipment performance. The group is responsible for maintaining the ships IT systems, which includes over 200 computer stations, 6 server racks using a variety of Microsoft and Unix Operating systems at different government classification levels. This is achieved through the timely operational administration of the Help Desk on board, maintenance, diagnosis and repair of equipment’s and systems within the Group and the sound application of good engineering standards and working practise, through effective mentoring of my team. Ensuring CIS equipment is operating at an optimum and clearly defined level within the specified Notice for Sea and Operational Notice. The WECIS group provides amphibious task group commanders and their staff with the IT services required to co-ordinate an amphibious battle through effective command, control and communication. During the embarkation, user accounts must be migrated from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) fixed network to the deployed environment on board HMS Bulwark. This requires careful co-ordination between a number of parties and organisations from Navy Command Headquarters IS teams and Information Systems Services organisation to industry partners such as the ATLAS consortium who provide a Deployed Service Management Team to assist with IT defects with user accounts, software and hardware. A sound knowledge of the migration process and IT system used on board is required to diagnose and repair any emergent user account problems, to be able to restore capability back to the user quickly and efficiently.

Devonport Engineering Support Group

Hmnb Devonport

Devonport Engineering Support GroupEngineering Team Supervisor. 2012 – 2014As a member of the Engineering Support Group (ESG) in Devonport Dockyard, worked closely with Babcock Marine Ltd personnel to plan, supervise and deliver weapon engineering support to front line ships undertaking Fleet Time Support Periods (FTSP), which is a package of maintenance and repairs required to keep the ship in good order. In this role close communication and organisation between ESG, Babcock and the ship was required in order to deliver and support the work package.Working daily in a busy dockyard and on board HM Ships in maintenance periods is inherently dangerous; it was extremely important to adhere to all Health & Safety and other appropriate regulations. There was also an opportunity for me to spend time in the Type 23 Frigate Class Output Management centre, where any trends in defects and Operational Defects were analysed that occurred on board Type 23 frigates in the Devonport Flotilla, in compiling this information it was intended to be able to deliver improved maintenance packages to ships in the future.

Close In Weapon System Head Of Group (Hms Albion)

Hms Albion

To act as Head of Section for the Close in Weapon System Goalkeeper, this was the ships point defence against incoming aircraft and missiles. The responsibilities in this role were to ensure equipment was available within the notice for sea and operational notice, which are designated periods of time for the equipment to be made available for use by the command to ensure the ship is at the correct posture to respond to any contingent operation or threat. A secondary role was to act as Officer of the Quarter, who was responsible for the maintenance of the explosive magazine Gun bay (compartments used on board ships to store explosive ammunition that have dedicated spray systems) associated with the Goalkeeper equipment. This involved adhering to all explosive safety regulations and orders laid down for the stowage, handling, test assembly, preparation and safe custody of the explosive and associated non-explosive stores within the quarter.Maintaining high engineering standards ensured the best performance and availability of all Section Equipment. The CIWS Goalkeeper was a rewarding but challenging system to maintain. During the draft there was the challenging task of regenerating and commissioning every part of the system (in what is called ‘Setting to Work’ by the Royal Navy), by conducting thorough tests and trials both in harbour (Harbour Acceptance Trials) and dynamically at sea (Sea Acceptance Trials), using the system documentation. This encompassed taking correct readings for Radar signals generated, control signals to move the gun mounting through to successfully acquiring and shooting a target. Before and after each firing of the Goalkeeper, a comprehensive system parameter analysis was taken to ensure optimum performance and accuracy.
