Managing a team of software engineers developing firmware and embedded, cloud and mobile software for Amazon branded Smart Home IoT devices. Devices utilize networking protocols including WiFi and BLE. Employing Agile/Scrum development processes to plan, manage and track progress. The team developed on FreeRTOS and AWS, using React, React Native, Java and C.

Led a team of software engineers developing various products including medical, aerospace, IoT, desktop, and web applications. Developed firmware for an environmental monitoring IoT device written in C running on the Particle IO microcontroller and software stack. Developed a SPI based driver for an IMU and integrated into the system software to record and process temperature, location, and movement. Architected and developed flight firmware for a micro-satellite payload launcher written in embedded C++ running bare-metal. The team utilized Jenkins for continuous integration and unit testing, and Jira for tracking tasks and Agile development.

Managed a team developing low-level embedded software for aerospace data storage and processing systems written in C/C++ for the WindRiver VxWorks RTOS. Employing Agile/Scrum development processes to plan, manage and track progress. Utilizing design and code reviews, static code analysis, unit and integration testing, and code coverage metrics to ensure superior quality throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Led firmware and electrical teams to develop an IoT live-monitored wearable personal safety device, in a startup environment. The device utilized GSM connectivity, GPS positioning, still photographs, and 2-way audio to monitor and track wearer, and to manage emergency events. Architected and developed the persistent storage system for managing all of the device’s data including event still photographs, audio, location, and logs. Firmware was written in C for the ThreadX RTOS. Managed RF development, testing and certification. Introduced management processes to track development progress and outstanding issues.

Developed firmware for an oil pipeline down-well integrity sensor utilizing acoustic soundwaves to determine if the pipeline or surrounding concrete were damaged, written in C running bare-metal.

IoT firmware engineer for low power parking sensors using a Nordic ARM-based microcontroller. Developed device firmware in C on bare metal utilizing a magnetometer to sense parking space occupation. Develop manufacturing tests using Visual Studio and .NET/C#.

Managed a team to develop the next generation hardware and firmware architecture for enterprise SSDs. Previous SOCs were designed with little regard for firmware. I instituted hardware and firmware co-architecting. The team utilized UML sequence diagrams to detail high performance operations, specifically read, write, and garbage collection. The sequence diagrams were then modeled to determine which portions should be implemented in hardware or firmware. Responsible for overall SSD controller roadmap plan and strategy.

Architected and developed firmware for an HDD media emulator running used to validate pre-silicon enterprise HDD controllers using FPGAs. The resulting firmware as used as the basis for production firmware. Led a multi-geography team of 50 engineers to develop firmware for next generation enterprise SSDs. Co-architect of a modular, reusable and extensible framework, which was designed from inception to support multiple protocols, including NVMe, SAS and SATA. Co-designed a simulation framework which enabled 90% of protocol firmware to be developed, integrated and tested prior to hardware availability. Introduced Agile development processes used to plan, manage and track progress, which resulted in improved project performance and progress visibility.
