About Daniela Rodrigues

Daniela Rodrigues research interests include the study of childhood obesity and associated determinants, namely: physical activity, sedentary behaviors (focusing on screen time) and diet patterns. She earned a PhD Fellowship from FCT to study the socio-ecological determinants of children's participation in extracurricular sports and its association with obesity levels. The PhD in Anthropology, specialization in Biological Anthropology, from University of Coimbra was concluded in 2018 with the highest grade. Since 2013, she is a member of the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS) - Human Biology, Health & Society Group - of the Univ. of Coimbra, which main objective is the study of the determinants of health and well-being in past and living societies from a bio-cultural perspective. As a researcher, Daniela has published several articles, has participated in many national and international scientific meetings, and is a member of national and international scientific associations in the field of obesity, physical activity and health. In October 2020, she won a contract as a Researcher from the 3rd edition of the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEEC) from FCT (2020.03966.CEECIND). In CEEC, Daniela will study the screen media use trajectories in a new cohort of Portuguese preschool-aged children. Daniela won the Maria de Sousa Award - 2nd Edition, promoted by the Portuguese Medical Association and the BIAL Foundation. She is also a team member in two European Projects.

PROJECT: ObesInCrisis - Inequalities in childhood obesity: The impact of the socio-economic crisis in Portugal from 2009 to 2015The prevalence of obesity has increased in recent decades, with the WHO considering childhood obesity one of the most serious global public health challenges of the century. In Europe, Portugal has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity, 31.6%. This project's main objective is to understand the effects of the economic crisis, which Portugal recently experienced, on social inequalities in childhood obesity. The main question is to know what changes have occurred, in terms of family behaviors – nutrition, food insecurity, physical activity and other behavioral factors – as well as in areas of residence – availability of resources, security and social organization – and what their impacts are on Child obesity. These questions highlight a major challenge for the entire scientific and political community, preventing the economic crisis from also becoming a health crisis.
