Scrub Nurse
CurrentI qualified and started practicing during the COVID pandemic. After just under 3 months of being qualified, I volunteered to help in the Intensive Care Units as a surge nurse, in order to gain new valuable skills and experience that I could take forward in my nursing career. This experience helped me develop being a flexible worker and helped me understand that I am good at working under pressure even in unfamiliar environments. I took this time to develop my nursing skills despite the circumstances, I completed my IV passport and Venepuncture and cannulation. After 3 months in ICU and HDU departments, I was back to theatres. Here I have been gathering experience as a proactive scrub practitioner, mainly in orthopaedic theatres but also in renal, urology, ENT and thoracic theatres. Within theatres I have been taking charge of complicated theatre lists and provided leadership, support and guidance to my team. I ensure safe and effective care for patients of different complexities and ensured effective and accurate communication and documentation. I have completed my SSSAP course and had the pleasure to be the primary assessor and supervisor of new starting staff members and students at different points of their courses. In addition, I volunteered to be part one of the trusts' initiatives to tackle surgery waiting lists from backlog from the pandemic (high intensity theatre lists). It was an honour to be a part of the planning and the actual lists and I also had the great honour of being chosen to represent Guy's and St Thomas Trust in the Nursing Times Awards for this initiative. It was a great experience and very inspiring to learn about the different projects that are possible to achieve in nursing.Currently senior staff nurse at Guy's Main Theatres specialising in orthopaedic minor and major surgery (Hips, Knees, Shoulders, Foot and ankle, Hands & Spine surgery).
