There is a current trend towards natural, adaptive in-vehicle spoken dialogue systems which react flexibly to the individual requirements of a driver or a driving situation. They aim to provide the driver with the most efficient form of interaction and to thereby reduce his cognitive load. Studies show that even the syntactic form of voice output has an influence on the driver and his driving performance. Against this background, my thesis focuses on a user-centered approach for a user- and situation-adaptive strategy for the syntactic design of voice ouput.

In my master thesis at Daimler AG in Sindelfingen (RD/UIA), entitled "Natural Language Characteristics for On-Board Applications – from Shallow Analysis to Deeper Characterization of Variability," I investigated actual language use in form of voice commands directed at spoken dialogue systems and the influence of predefined contexts on linguistic realizations.Against the background of in-vehicle on-board speech functions and current research tendencies towards intuitive conversational dialogue systems, this thesis focuses on the linguistic analysis of language use in system requests aiming at the deduction of language- and domain-specific characteristics. By means of techniques from computational linguistics, general linguistic phenomena have been examined on distinct levels of analysis, such as Lexis, Syntax and Pragmatics.Besides the work done in several student projects at University of Tübingen, the topic of this thesis perfectly matches my research interests representing the possibility to extensively pursue highly topical areas in current research by employing a range from simple to more elaborate techniques from computational linguistics.
