Our work focuses on plasticity promoting effects of levodopa after stroke. We have performed experiments suggesting a modulatory role of dopamine on mechanisms of neurotransmission and neuronal plasticity. For example, we found that levodopa reduced the level of neurotransmitter vesicles associated proteins i.e. synaptogyrin. This suggests that dopamine directly modulates the release and possible the re-uptake of neurotransmitters. Likewise, we hypothesize that administration of levodopa also affects the morphology and density of dendritic spines after experimental stroke. Our studies have potential clinical implication, since adjuvant dopaminergic treatment could be implemented in structural physical therapy protocols, as an adjuvant recovery enhancing treatment.

I enrolled my PhD studies at Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI), at Faculdade de Ciencias e Sáude (FCS) in the Health Sciences Research Center (CICS) in 2015, in collaboration with the Laboratory for Experimental Brain Research, Medical Faculty at Lund University. The scope of the project was to evaluate the role of thyroid hormones and transthyretin in functional recovery after experimental stroke.I would highlight the work on mechanisms brain plasticity after stroke. This area of stroke research is a new venue for development of novel post-stroke therapeutics that enhance rehabilitation of stroke patients. We have demonstrated that the thyroid hormone 3,5,3′-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) regulates the excitation-inhibition ratio in the cortex by increasing the excitability of pyramidal neurons and mitigating activity of parvalbumin-containing GABA-ergic interneurons. The restoration of cortical excitability is of importance for processing sensory information prior to execution of a motor task in the post-stroke brain. These findings may have implications for the development of rehabilitative therapies after stroke.
