Dr. Daniela Gomes is from São Paulo, Brazil and is a PhD in African and African Diaspora Studies, with certification in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Texas – Austin. She is currently joining the Department of Africana Studies at San Diego State University. Dr. Gomes is an MA in Cultural Studies with certification in Media, Information and Culture and a BA in journalism. Dr. Gomes is an activist in the Afro-Brazilian Movement and has worked close to Human Rights and antiracist organizations in Brazil, in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Gomes’ dissertation "Hip-hop salvação: Afro-narratives of the hip-hop generation in São Paulo, Brazil Or how hip-hop showed us the way out!" tells the history of the hip-hop generation in Brazil. Dr. Gomes' research approaches the impacts of hip-hop, for Black youths living in the periferias of São Paulo, particularly focusing on how hip-hop promoted messages of transformation, racial, political and social empowerment.In 2016 she narrated her personal journey with hip-hop during her Ted Talk “O poder do hip hop” during the TEDxSaoPaulo.Dr. Gomes' work can be accessed through her social media, broadcast interviews, academic publications, as well as public lectures.
