About Daniel Almonacid

As the Chief Scientific Officer at Digbi Health, I lead a team of data scientists, bioinformaticians, and nutritionists to develop and deliver personalized health solutions based on microbiota and genomic data. I have 20 years of experience in molecular informatics, biochemistry, genomic enzymology and microbiome science, and I hold a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, and a BSc in Biochemistry from Universidad de Concepción (Chile). I also have 5-year postdoctoral experience from the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. My mission is to leverage cutting-edge technologies and data-driven insights to improve the health and well-being of people with chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and irritable bowel syndrome. I have contributed to the advancement of the microbiome field as a prolific inventor, author, and speaker, with multiple patents, publications, and honors. I also enjoy teaching and mentoring the next generation of scientists and innovators, and collaborating with diverse and multidisciplinary teams across academia and industry.

  • Ucsf
    Postdoctoral Scholar
    Ucsf Dec 2007 - Nov 2012
    San Francisco, California, Us
Postdoctoral scholar working under the supervision of Prof. Patricia Babbitt. I used quantitative measurements of reaction and substrate similarity to study enzymes member of both mechanistically diverse superfamilies and functionally analogous groups. I was particularly interested in contrasting the results of clustering of enzymes obtained by the traditional approaches of sequence, structure and active site residue similarities with the methods I developed around mechanistic and reaction similarity, and in the creation of a new classification scheme for enzymes based on these quantitative measurements. The aim was to find a useful relationship between structure and function in enzymes that could help inform approaches for function annotation of sequences and structures of unknown activity and to inform the search for existing templates for engineering enzymes with novel activities.
