About Daniel Barousse

I lead an internationally recognized, award winning team of engineers to push the boundaries of thermodynamics so people can (3D) print their dreams. I love building things. It started with LEGOs as a kid, led to a mechanical engineering degree, then a career in medical device manufacturing, research and development. The medical device industry taught me that people matter more than systems, but you need both to build a high-functioning team. So in 2017 I started on an adventure to build such a team. My team has been awarded:- International Startup of the Year by 3D Printing Industry (2021)- Sterling Manufacturing Business Excellence Gold Winner by Florida Makes (2021)- Top 50 Florida Companies to Watch by GrowFL (2021)- Top Additive Manufacturing Companies by Manufacturing Outlook (2021)All of those accolades are great, but what keeps the team motivated every day is helping our customers achieve their goals using additive manufacturing (3D printing), whether that be launching a patient-specific medical device, rapidly repairing a mission-critical part in a warzone, improving the safety of bicyclists with new helmet technology, or simply making a bespoke fun toy for their kids. We work with world class organizations like the United States Navy, NASA, Oak Ridge National Lab, GE Healthcare, Merck Pharmaceuticals, and numerous research universities, small businesses, and consumers around the world. Outside of work I spend time with my wife and son, volunteer in the community, attempt to do Crossfit, and run. “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”- Rabindranath Tagore

  • Axogen, Inc.
    Process Engineer
    Axogen, Inc. Dec 2017 - Jul 2019
    Alachua, Fl, Us
  • Rti Surgical®
    Research And Development Engineer
    Rti Surgical® Feb 2017 - Dec 2017
    Alachua, Fl, Us
I was the technical lead for new product validation and launch in the Sports Medicine and Surgical Specialties markets, successfully launching two brand new allograft products in 10 months. I collaborated with Marketing to evaluate surgeon needs and develop regenerative medicine (tissue engineering) solutions to common problems. Additionally, I led lean initiatives to improve production capacity, reduce waste, and optimize production processes. My role also encompassed business development and early technology vetting for an $80 mil revenue channel.
  • Rti Surgical®
    Process Development Engineer
    Rti Surgical® Nov 2015 - Feb 2017
    Alachua, Fl, Us
My responsibilities primarily involved technology transfer - transitioning new products from R&D into Operations/manufacturing or clinical trials. This included process development, validation (IOPQ and PV) and verification to comply with FDA, ISO and cGMP standards, creating work instructions and standard operating procedures and work flow optimization. I became very familiar with ISO 9001, ISO 13408, ISO 14937 and ISO 14161, as well as FDA Class I, II and III medical device requirements, and 361 HCTP device requirements. I received intermediate and advanced certification in GD&T through the International Institute of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing. Also worked with CNC machining, tool and equipment design, and learned EdgeCam and Camworks, and some G-code. I also supervised engineering interns in the creation of WI/SOP and IOPQ documentation.
  • Rti Surgical®
    Manufacturing Engineer
    Rti Surgical® May 2013 - Nov 2015
    Alachua, Fl, Us
I was accountable for manufacturing support, firefighting, process improvement and optimization for two distinct value streams. I was given technical ownership of an automated primary sterilization process, which consisted of eight individual manufacturing lines. The role also included validation (IQ, OQ, PQ), risk analysis (FMEA), technical writing, manufacturing equipment design, and process design. The sterilization process was highly inefficient and lacking in reliability when I started as the manufacturing engineer. I was able to identify many opportunities for significant improvements, and pitch senior leadership on funding the projects, which I subsequently managed. Accomplishments include developing a comprehensive, data driven, condition based maintenance (CBM) program that improved reliability and up-time by 96%, and reduced annual maintenance costs by 65%. I also introduced process improvements that cut cycle times by 11% and cut operating costs by nearly $500,000.
  • Southern Company
Technical Co-Op - Data Acquisition & Real Time Signaling
    Southern Company Aug 2012 - Nov 2012
    Atlanta, Ga, Us
During my co-op with Southern Company I was part of an electrical engineering group that supported communications between power plants and the central control hub in Birmingham, Alabama. My duties included installation of cyber security enhancement features, such as data diodes, troubleshooting SCADA systems, data acquisition and analysis, creating and modifying engineering drawings, and providing technical support to power plant operators. I learned a lot about crisis management and firefighting, SCADA systems and PLC's, cyber security and data acquisition.
  • Rolls-Royce
    Service Engineer Intern
    Rolls-Royce May 2012 - Aug 2012
    London, England, Gb
I worked in a post-launch engineering product group, supporting small civil aviation engines. These engines can be found on aircraft such as the Cessna Citation X, Embraer ERJ145, and the Embraer Legacy. My role involved data analysis surrounding engine maintenance, and technical writing - specifically making updates and changes to the AE3007 engine manual. This was my first time working in a heavily regulated (FAA) environment. While at Rolls Royce I had the opportunity to lead a major "high consequence event" investigation to determine the root cause behind an in-flight variable vane failure, which involved traveling to the site and observing the engine breakdown, then performing SEM on the failed parts. I also led a compressor blade maintenance change that extended the useful life of the blades by 10% and saved Rolls-Royce $1.2 mil in annual costs.
  • Comparative Orthopaedics And Biomechanics Laboratory
    Test Engineer
Comparative Orthopaedics And Biomechanics Laboratory Apr 2010 - Apr 2012
The Comparative Orthopaedics and Biomechanics Laboratory is a collaborative research effort between the UF Mechanical Engineering Department, UF Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Institute and UF College of Veterinary Medicine. I started in the lab as a research assistant for Dr. Bryan Conrad, but over the course of my tenure advanced to running the lab. I worked with veterinary and medical residents to help them develop experiments to test hypotheses for clinical orthopaedic applications that would be used for theses and publications. This frequently included developing test methods, jig and fixture design, performing experiments, data collection and analysis, and technical writing. I learned how to work with data acquisition devices (DAQ's), LabVIEW, drill press, lathes and milling machines, and had the opportunity to co-author several papers, one of which was published in ACVS
  • University Of Florida
    Translator
University Of Florida Jan 2009 - Apr 2010
    Gainesville, Florida, Us
The UF Library system had a major project to transliterate (convert) all "Latinized" versions of Cyrillic language entries into their native alphabets. Over the course of more than a year I transliterated almost 10,000 Russian and other Slavic language catalog entries. I was already fluent in conversational Russian, but taught myself to read Serbian, Ukrainian and Czech.
