Profile bio

About Dan Hale

My programming experience ranges from: UI for network hardware, games, and system visualization; golf simulations; video game design and gameplay code; water modelling; and medical software. I've done a lot of User Interface work but I'm just as frequently working on the back-end stuff.I'm currently working on the E6 golf simulator at TruGolf, and I worked on the Tesla Effect game by Big Finish Games. Previously I wrote user interfaces for complex networks and hardware, helping to better visualize and control a complex system. At Aquaveo I was maintaining & developing the user interface and tools that help users manage and visualize from water modeling software data (like 100 year floods, levees collapsing, sediment transfer, etc). In medical industry I specialized in electronic billing and patient record management.Emphasis in C++ programming, UI, and back-end code. I've also worked on video games both professionally and as a hobby, though I'm hesitant to re-enter the games industry because I don't like lots of unpaid overtime, etc.I'm good at working alone or in a team, and when able I like to leave a project cleaner than I found it. I believe in writing well-documented, easy to maintain code so that I and other developers are not spinning our wheels every time we revisit it to add a feature or address a bug.Main Skills:C++ (including Qt framework)Both UI and Back-end codeNetwork communication via socket, web fetching, etcSubversion and bug tracking tools such as TFS, SVN, Git, MantisI have previous experience with both Linux and Windows development.Past skills that are a decade or more old:PHP & PERLDHTML, JavaScript, CSS, and cross-browser support; DOM XML and SOAP callsApache servers, system & network managementDatabases, mainly PostgreSQL and MySQLSome art tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, FlashVideo game programming: Nintendo Wii and DS, XBox 360, PCSome experience w/ medical applications, X12 835 & 837 electronic billing formats

Listed skills include C++, Xml, Game Programming, C, and 39 others.

Software Engineer

Centerville, Ut

I add features and mini-games to their golfing simulator software, and fix bugs. I write mainly of C++ code ranging from UI to back-end socket communication, and I've occasionally gotten to put my (sadly atrophied) vector math skills to good use here. That's felt good. :DI also got to work on Tesla Effect, the newest Tex Murphy video game. I touched a variety of things in that project including the save game system, various bits of UI, and lots of bug fixes.

I also wrote handy tools for the admins and other developers to save them time and help them diagnose problems more effectively. The software also needed to be able to display signal hierarchy and allow inspecting signal quality, right down to verifying packets (though some of this was handled through separate software). I also wrote widgets for visually graphing signal quality (e.g. spectrograms using the QWT library) and surveying signals. Show less

Software Engineer

I worked on SMS, software that visually modeled the flow of water in rivers, dams, etc. I mostly worked on user interface, bug fixing, and adding usability features.

Software Engineer (Gameplay Programmer)

As a gameplay programmer, I wrote the game code and implemented a variety of features, ranging from character movement and interactions, to camera and map modes, and minigames. Our team was responsible for taking a bare game engine, art, and a game design and creating the actual game from them. At PF I maintained the openEMR project and provided custom features for client hospitals. I took ownership of the entire application including user interface and DB and each custom version and feature we had created for clients. I became especially familiar with electronic billing using the X12 835 and 837 billing formats, as well as HCFA.
