This symposium led to the publication of a joint statement pertaining to the importance of assessing functional outcomes. Dr. Bruns is an author of numerous research articles and book chapters about chronic pain, and is the coauthor of 3 standardized psychological tests used for the assessment of patients with chronic pain or illness. Dr. Bruns coauthored a 15 year-long longitudinal study of 29 million patients suffering from pain or injury which helped to establish the benefits of the biopsychosocial model. Dr. Bruns is also the coauthor of three standardized psychological tests designed to assess patients with pain or injury. With regard to educational activities, Dr. Bruns was a co-author of pain curriculum for the American Psychological Association and the North American Spine Society, and coauthored the chapter on the psychological assessment of chronic pain for the American Academy of Pain Medicine’s textbook. Dr. Bruns is the recipient of multiple national awards for his work as a pain psychologist. The President of the American Psychological Association gave him the 2023 Heiser award for his lifetime of science-based advocacy for mental health services. He received the Health Psychology Career Service Award from the Society for Health Psychology in 2022, a citation for contributions to the field of health psychology from the president of the American Psychological Association in 2016, and a “Data Harmonization Pioneer” award from the National Cancer Institute in 2011. He was designated a Health Psychology Fellow by the American Psychological Foundation in 2012, received the Clinical Health Psychology Award from the American Psychological Foundation in 2010, received a Presidential Award from the Society for Health Psychology in 2008, and in 2001 received a commendation from Governor Bill Owens of Colorado for his work in the development of the Colorado Medical Treatment Guidelines.
