About Daniel Demarco, Ph.D.
Skilled, proven, and driven research scientist with significant bench and management experience. I have a demonstrated track record of scientific achievement and new product development (from ideation to experimentation to commercialization). I have an unusual perspective on the food industry and food pathogen testing due to my background which includes close to ten years experience in R&D as a method developer (DuPont) and almost as much time in various roles, including R&D, in a third party testing lab (Eurofins). At Eurofins I had the unique opportunity to use and support many of the same methods I developed in my former life. I have a passion for science in general and microbiology/molecular biology in particular. Food pathogen diagnostics has been my area of expertise for many years now but I have been involved in diagnostics in some capacity since graduate school and have been interested in microbiology since I first looked into a microscope as a child. Beyond biology I have an interest astronomy, cosmology, and physics and a special interest in technical philosophy and do my best to keep abreast of the latest advancements in formal and symbolic logic, neurophilosophy, and analytic philosophy. I consider myself an "expert" in the philosophy of Wittgenstein. I am also an avid writer and have self published close to 3000 articles in just about every genre and ouevre known to man including a few of my own invention on various new media and blogging websites. My CV is attached for additional information about my background and experience. It is somewhat abbreviated given the breadth and scope of my career activities.

DuPont Nutrition and Health - Molecular Diagnostics. Lead/manage diverse research group as part of overall R&D effort in DuPont N&H Diagnostics group. Research team consists of 7 senior and mid-level Ph.D. principal investigators and 2-4 entry to mid-level staff scientists. Research group is responsible for all research phase activities related to the development of new molecular diagnostic assays for food-borne pathogens and quality indicator microorganisms. Recent work includes real-time PCR based (scorpion probes) assays for SE/ST, Listeria monocytogenes, and Genus Listeria, as well as a novel highly-multiplexed assay for the detection/differentiation of a panel of pathogenically significant serovars of Salmonella. R&D lead for evaluation of new/alternative detection and sample preparation technologies. Support technical and sales teams with significant domestic and global participation in customer, and prospect customer visits as well as assay troubleshooting. Participation and technical presentations at variety of leading food industry conferences including IAFP, Detection Technologies, AIFST, ASM, etc.

DuPont Qualicon. Lead principal investigator for assay development/food microbiology. Led diverse research teams in the development of PCR and reverse transcriptase PCR assays for various food-borne pathogens. Conducted research and development activities associated with the design and successful commercialization of assays for Listeria monocytogenes, Genus Listeria, Salmonella, and shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC). STEC assays have recently been adopted as official methods by USDA-FSIS. R&D lead for evaluation of new/alternative detection and sample preparation technologies. Supported technical and sales teams with significant domestic and global participation in customer, and prospect customer visits as well as assay troubleshooting. Corporate Center for Engineering Research. Led industrial microbiology research lab as principal investigator managing four laboratory technicians. Assisted DuPont manufacturing sites in troubleshooting and remediating microbial contamination of industrial processes using molecular (ribotyping) and classical microbiological techniques. Developed methods for evaluating antimicrobial properties of DuPont materials. Conducted biocide efficacy studies in liquid samples and with biofilms. Led program to evaluate various novel sensor technologies for the detection/monitoring of microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) in industrial processes. Consulted with DuPont Central Research and Development (CR&D) in developing and evaluating research proposals for various DuPont businesses. Co-lead investigator in research program to develop and evaluate a novel reverse transcriptase PCR assay for detection of Listeria on environmental surfaces. Assay development included evaluation and optimization of phage based sample preparation technology for specific capture and lysis of Listeria.

Fellow at Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health State Laboratory Institute (Boston, MA.). Assisted in classical microbiological methods for isolation of enteric pathogens from human clinical specimens. Trained in pulsed field gel electrophoresis techniques (PFGE) for molecular characterization of E. coli O157:H7 and other enteric pathogens. Developed novel PFGE method for characterization of Bordetella pertussis.
