Design Engineer

High Performance Aircraft Group

Park City, Utah, United States

- Lancair Evolution inlet redesign¤ The internship's main project was to redesign the turboprop kit plane inlet to reduce inlet drag and fix oil cooler problems with the goal of increasing flight cruise speed.¤ Researched possible inlet configurations to obtain better performance with lower drag, includingchin- and pitot type inlets and NACA scoops, interactions between propeller and inlet location andgeometry, and engine performance based on inlet shape and mass flow rate.¤ Applied aerodynamic and system integration knowledge to streamline and improve ram pressurerecovery and reduce drag of inlet by extending the inlet closer to the prop, reducing the verticaldistance from engine lip to propeller hub of the pitot inlet, separating the engine and oil coolerducts and properly designing the inlet lip shape.¤ Created CAD drawings in SolidWorks of improved inlet and engine cowling.- Test flight engineer for prototype Lancair Evolution with experimental P&W engine.- Assisted with making of carbon fiber engine air duct and moving the oil cooler forward on the prototype Evolution.- Drag reduction study of de Havilland Vampire to be used in the Reno Air Races.
