Thesis title: "Bored Tunnel Lining Behaviour in Discontinuous Rock".Main objective of the research was to predict longitudinal tunnel behaviour of a segmental tunnel lining through fault zones, which involved abrupt changes in rock mass properties. The 2D/3D Plaxis models were calibrated with data from a Middle-East case, containing calcareous rocks, a high groundwater level and a large overburden thickness. Models were predicted and validated using analytical 2D transversal and longitudinal solutions. Results showed that influence of narrow fault zones on the tunnel lining can be excluded.

Research on the failure mechanism piping occurring under water retaining soil structures.During the preliminary investigation a research is done on how the structure of a dike is constructed, which failure mechanisms can occur in which stage of implementation. A clear overview of all the changes in regulations for the so called "Wettelijk Toetsinginstrumentarium (WTI 2017)" is composed. This is followed by the research on the different design rules for the failure mechanism "piping", which are Lane, Bligh and Sellmeijer, and their modification due to the new laws on retaining structures.Hereafter the existing and innovative (most of them in start-up phase) piping-preventionmeasures are investigated. The chances, risks, conditions and costs for these are summed up.Based on the preliminary investigation two cases are elaborated. Next the outcomes of the worked out cases are compared to certify the main differences.With the aid of all the gathered information , after the investigation and the outcome of the cases, a selection matrix is made. This matrix will be used to choose and present a preventionmeasure more efficient, quicker and cheaper.
