Senior Researcher In Networking Lab
Ismb
In 2005, in collaboration with the head of the department, I began working on open-source wireless embedded systems. In these years I have worked on several projects, initially as a researcher and then as a technical leader. Amongst the several, I would like to list the following: • A project in collaboration with one of the main industrial robot manufacturing company in Italy. Our aim was to substitute the cables of a robot control platforms with a WiFi link. After several months of tests and tuning we achieved a reliable communication channel that transports both control and safety signals. This solution is still being sold as a product today.• A project with the goal of designing and developing a low-cost industrial-grade wireless embedded system. Its purpose was the monitoring of environmental parameters in a very harsh environment (from an EMC point of view). The gathered data was to be sent to a control center via a long-distance WiFi link. The system had to powered with a low-power energy harvesting system (designed by another company) and built with COTS electronics and open source software. My responsibility was to coordinate the group of engineers that designed and developed the embedded system taking in account the electronics for sensing and EMC protection, the antennas, the design of the networking, the control center, the e-security aspects, etc…. As the prototype had to be as close as possible to the finished engineered product, I had to consider this aspect and pursue the contacts with suppliers. The prototypes were entirely operational and passed the industrial EMC tests.• Several projects with private companies regarding WiFi networks design and troubleshooting.
