As health care in the U.S. continues to grow in cost and complexity, health systems must increasingly rely on both internal and external data to remain competitive and serve their communities effectively. These are two mutually dependent objectives.Health system data is highly complex and typically requires people with considerable subject matter knowledge and technical skill in order to yield any meaningful insights. A skilled data scientist or analyst not only understands and is capable with this data, but anticipates customer needs and facilitates their involvement at all stages of project development without coming across as overbearing, non-communicative, or hyper-technical. I've spent over 20 years working in the health sector and possess these qualities. At the start of my career, I worked as a health care practitioner before shifting gears and going back to school to study health economics. Since 2020 I've been employed as a health system data analyst. I work with typical internal health system data: EMR, scheduling, billing & coding. I also work with external data from ACO payors and the US Census bureau. I am proficient in R, SQL, and the Tableau suite of applications and use these tools on a daily basis for data extraction, cleaning, visualization, and modeling. I get the most satisfaction out of my job when I can make the people within my organization more confident, productive, or engaged in their day-to-day work.
