About Daniel Fernando

I am a marine biologist and conservationist based in Sri Lanka where I conduct elasmobranch research and help shape environmental management policy at regional and international scales. One of my research focuses is on the biology and ecology of elasmobranchs (all sharks, rays, and chimaeras) in the Indian Ocean for which I have established a long-term fisheries monitoring project. Through Blue Resources Trust I also support capacity building to encourage young students and scientists to study the marine environment surrounding our island nation. In addition to field research, I support the development of international policy to better manage and regulate elasmobranch fisheries while encouraging a shift towards sustainable fisheries. I do this through conventions such as CITES and CMS and through RFMO's such as IOTC. Some of my research and conservation work has been featured in documentaries including ITV in the UK and Al Jazeera International.Specialities: Fisheries research, marine policy development, marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, EIA's, fixer for nature documentaries.
