Rankings & Awards Specialist/Writer
Greater New York City Area
This role was brand new to the firm when I took it in May 2018. The task was simple: figure out a way to efficiently produce persuasive research reports of high quality for the litigation side of the firm: about 40 per year, at tens of pages each (see one link below for a representative form template). Law firms, like colleges, are ranked, and these reports are each law firm's chance to make their case for higher individual and firm-wide rankings. There are three primary components to this task: (1) the infrastructural task of managing all relevant deliverables, (2) persuasive writing and knowledge of the firm's legal work across many practice groups, and (3) preparing partners for interviews with ranking publications.(1) The submission production process requires rigorous tracking of not only 100+ individual components per month, but almost as many formal approvals given by relevant lawyers (who could very well be on a plane, train, or on the other side of the world). On top of that, no piece of writing can leave the firm if it does not comport with client preferences and a web of fiduciary legal obligations, which I confirm. To centralize this work within one person, (in addition to familiarizing myself with the firm's caseload) I created a series of data collation and knowledge management tools that are simple and easy to use, all within Excel. (2) The submissions require ongoing knowledge of the firm's litigation work across multiple practice groups, including (for example) anti-corruption, antitrust, securities litigation, white collar litigation, and more. Without this knowledge, it is almost impossible to write appropriate contextualizing support prose that explains why the firm's work is notable.(3) Keeping in mind their severe time constraints, I prepared partners for many research interviews with a variety of legal ranking organizations.
