Project Engineer
My time at CRP was varied and interesting. I tackled a large array of different projects and gained knowledge in a wide range of fieldsI am responsible for:- Managing projects worth, cumulatively, over £750,000.- Engineering design of process improvements using tools such as Solidworks, AutoCAD, and FEA.- Process support to manufacturing equipment. (e.g., Transfer moulding presses, Ovens, hydraulic presses)- Failure analysis on breakdowns or product failures.- Developing internal processes to automate/improve efficiency of various jobsMy work has allowed me to develop my abilities of all elements of an engineering project:- Initial Scope + FEED study (including; front end design, CAPEX creation and capacity analysis)- Detailed design, both internal parts (e.g. jigs, manual handling aids) and working with external suppliers to obtain specific equipment (e.g. conveyor layouts, guarding design etc…).- Budget management- Organisation of external and internal resource- Management of risks- Commissioning- Creation of supporting documentation (e.g. risk assessments, operating procedures)- Training of operatorsHeadline projects:- Replacement and upgrade of an old manufacturing oven to allow for manufacture of larger product and reduce manual handling with a push pull chain.- Installation of a blank slate painting facility. This included a painting booth, drying oven to reduce drying times and overhead conveyor system to reduce handling.- Installation of a new fabrication and automated welding facility. This is a completely new process for the company. This included a robotic welding cell, various fabrication machinery (drills, bandsaw, notch grinder) and design of tack welding jigging to ensure repeatability.Due to the nature of the product made at CRP I have gained a strong understanding of processing fluoropolymers. This includes material properties and a strong working knowledge of temperature controllers in various applications.
Mechanical/Project Graduate Engineer
The Croda graduate development program moved me to different positions and sites each year. This allowed me to develop a range of skills and lead a variety of projects.Across my placements I held the following roles and responsibilities:• Y1 – Graduate Mechanical Engineer - Draftsmanship. I created and updated P&IDs/isometric drawings for the engineering team - Early stage concept design. I created 3D models to present proposals to senior management- Created fabrication drawings for small installations (brackets/testing rigs)- Designed a pallet loading platform- Proposed using 3D CAD for design work to senior management. Trials began shortly after I left.• Y2 – Graduate Maintenance Engineer - Maintenance actions. I installed boundary isolations to reduce shutdown/start up times, coated the water storage tank, replaced old pipework.- Developed a FMEA to improve planned maintenance. • Y3 – Mechanical Project Graduate Engineer- Project delivery. I lead projects from conception to completion. I am installing a hotbox, a ventilation system for a plant, replacing old drum filling machines. I have; developed the scope, created a cost estimate, submitted a CAPEX, detailed design, risk assessed the design, planned the installation, controlled contractors, prepared for validation and commissioning and written operating procedures.- Draftsmanship. I provide support for the engineering team and created the utility P&IDs- Used AutoCAD to demonstrate designs and create fabrication drawings- Installed small mechanical changes (powder loading port and platform for process vessels)- I wrote the site engineering drawing standard, and updated other site standards. I have had a range of training. Notable training has been:- Steam/boiler house utilisation - TLV efficient use of process steam- IChemE project management - Root cause analysis- Failure Mode Effects Analysis- Risk assessment/work authorisation
Summer Research Assistant
- Assessed the crushing properties of graphite for the evaluation of strength and particle size in order to determine the optimum experimental parameters required to sizing and milling irradiated graphite. This was linked to an industrial funded project examining solutions for accelerated decommissioning UK reactors, with the research conducted in the Nuclear Graphite Research Group - Gained experience of experimental techniques including optical microscopy, crushing, and particle size distribution on various nuclear graphite grades- Carried out Risk Assessment analysis- Prepared an industrial and academic report with data analysis.
Shop Assistant
While working here I gained:- Communication skills- Stock management
