About Daniel Kinzer

How might we grow learning ecosystems conducive to well-being, collective intelligence and shared abundance while regenerating Life on our Planet Ocean? Daniel is at home in Hawai'i - inspired by the Polynesian Voyaging Society (as well as other indigenous movements around the world); their traditional Polynesian wa'a, or voyaging canoes; and the story of Hōkūle'a and her worldwide voyage. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Biomimicry - innovation inspired by Nature -and is a Biomimicry Professional with Biomimicry 3.8 where he's concentrated on marine ecology and innovative solutions to climate change and ocean-related challenges, as well as applying biomimicry to complex social issues, especially reimagining education. He is fascinated by the natural world, and particularly the Ocean and other wild places, and the intersections of these places and human culture and consciousness. Since graduating from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Psychology and Neuroscience, he has been nurturing a global network of explorers and change makers by growing a learning ecosystem that can inspire and empower them. An avid traveler and adventurer, Daniel has spent the past two decades living, working and learning in international schools, nonprofits and social enterprises across more than 80 countries, all 7 continents, and all 5 of our planet's oceans, including an expedition to Antarctica in December 2018 as part of his fellowship with National Geographic and expeditions to Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and the Pacific Remote Islands Monument in 2023 and 2024 on board E/V Nautilus. Daniel has led sustainability and innovation programs at Punahou School and Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu; served as a Teacher Fellow for National Geographic, Ecology Project International and Ocean Exploration Trust; and co-created place-based innovation platforms with Purple Mai'a Foundation, Mālama Maunalua and Polynesian Voyaging Society as well as many schools, innovation programs and environmental organizations around the world. From his place in Hawai'i, Daniel launched Pacific Blue Studios: a network of community and place-based, youth-powered, design and impact studios leveraging biomimicry, indigenous perspective and cutting-edge technologies as vehicles to grow, connect and amplify a (k)new intergenerational learning ecosystem and help realize a resilient, regenerative and inclusive future in Hawai'i, around the Pacific, and across our Blue Planet.

  • Planetwalk
    Learning Journey Designer
    Planetwalk Oct 2013 - Present
I was the chief instigator and catalyst of Planetwalk: China - a project inspired by Planetwalker, Dr. John Francis. Planetwalk brings life to learning and learning to life. We transcend the disciplinary, environmental, social, and cultural walls of the current global education system and embrace deeper learning through authentic engagement with the world that surrounds us. Our vision is of a new map, story and complex understanding of the world, generated by youth from around the planet journeying together. We are creating the first beta Planetwalk Learning Journey Curriculum and training a team of educators in the USA and China to continue as ambassadors and trainers for Planetwalk - designing and delivering the Planetwalk Learning Journey experience globally. “How we treat each other is how we treat the environment.” We believe that this simple message can help change the world. Many believe that the global education system has not kept pace with the degradation of the environment, and that the complex network of problems often labeled as “ the environmental crisis” has surpassed our ability to cope. Pollution, climate change, and loss of species and habitat, along with the rise of the sea level and health issues such as asthma, obesity and nature deficit disorder, all complicate the solution. We seek to replace an attitude of indifference or despair with inspiration and empowerment by providing tools and methods for identifying and addressing the network of environmental problems affecting us. One key representation of our journeys will be Planetlines, where young Planetwalkers are remapping the world through the various lenses they have acquired on their way. This evolving, dynamic map is built at human speed and at human scale, drawing upon the first-hand experiences and perspectives of youth from around the world learning to see their environments and each other in new ways.

We support schools in transitioning to the required new paradigms for a sustainable future. Our focus is on reframing the relationships involved in education: between students and teacher, between learner and learning, and between school and community. We help clarify vision and build capacity around entrepreneurial and value-based learning using co-creation and appreciative inquiry to help students and organizations become adaptable, self-nourishing networks, and graduates to be the same.
  • Chinese International School | 漢基國際學校
Director Of Experiential Learning @ Cis Hangzhou
Chinese International School | 漢基國際學校 Jun 2013 - Jun 2016
    Hong Kong, Hk
This began as an exciting collaboration between Chinese International School Hong Kong and The JUMP! Foundation to design, coordinate and deliver the world's premier year-long experiential learning program to Year 10/Grade 9 students immersed in the mainland Chinese natural, social, and cultural landscapes. The innovative, holistic, interdisciplinary, passion-driven, project-based, learner-centered program launched on September 1, 2013 at the CIS Hangzhou China Center.I led an incredibly diverse team of 14 Faculty and 8 Coach-Mentors in all aspects of 14+ off-site IB MYP interdisciplinary learning experiences, delivered over the course of 1 academic year, that took students and faculty through an exploration of themselves, their community, Hangzhou and mainland China; and of increasing complexity and levels of engagement. This involved everything from coordinating logistics, preparing and coaching facilitators, budgeting and expense reporting, program design and evaluation and communications. The adventure continued at Chinese International School Hangzhou as my focus expanded to designing learning environments that foster wonder, deeper thinking, connectivity, meaningful action and learning to be. My laboratories are varied, ranging from traditional learning spaces to urban streets and alleyways, business and non-profit offices, rural country roads and farm fields, village squares, riverside paths and mountain trails. I am continuing the development of the Planetwalk Learning Journey and The Walking Campus in partnership with National Geographic and Alibaba. I specialize in building rich and lasting collaborations with multiple community partners that foster deep learning in authentic contexts.I was also actively involved in the overall life of the Center as an IB MYP Geography/Humanities teacher, Basketball coach, and Deputy Head of House.Visit the website for more information:ccc.cis.edu.hk/cis-hangzhou/index.aspx
