Daniell Cornell is Curator Emeritus at the Palm Springs Art Museum and an independent arts professional, cultural historian, curator, consultant, and educator with a focus on theories of representation, cultural meaning, politics, gender and sexuality. He served as Fulbright Professor of American Culture at the University of Porto, Portugal, and has held positions at The New Museum in NYC, The Morgan Library, Yale University Art Gallery, and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco where was Director of Contemporary Art projects from 2000-2008. He was Director of Art at Palm Springs Art Museum, California, from 2008-2017 and Artistic Director from 2018-19. Currently he serves on the advisory board of BoxoPROJECTS, an artist residency program in Joshua Tree. In addition to writing, teaching, and lecturing, he is working with the June Harwood Charitable Trust as exhibition consultant for the artist’s first major retrospective, which opens at the Benton Art Museum, Pomona College, in fall 2023. Dr. Cornell holds PhDs from the City University of New York Graduate School in Art History and Criticism and from Washington State University in American Studies. Among his many prior exhibitions and commissions are those by international contemporary artists including Gerhard Richter, Ruth Asawa, James Turrell, Andy Goldsworthy, Zhan Wang, Catherine Wager, John Bankston, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Shi Guorui, Shimon Attie, Gilbert and George, Lewis deSoto, and Jeffrey Gibson. In addition, exhibitions with monographic studies include Albert Frey and Lina Bo Bardi: Living Architecture; Jennifer Karady: Soldiers’ Stories; Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Southern California Photography; Robert Mapplethorpe Portraits; Shifting Currents in Asian American Modern Art; Ruth Asawa: Contours in the Air; Adi Ness: Promise and Possibility; Visual Culture as History; and Alfred Stieglitz, Equivalents.
