Responsible for leading EPA Region 8's talented team of environmental justice and environmental review practitioners to ensure full implementation of EO 12898, “Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority and Low-income Populations." Our goal is to ensure that environmental justice is fully integrated into all environmental programs in the region, that we are fully compliant with NEPA, and that critical Children's Health and Environmental Education programs are realized throughout our Mountains and Plains region.

Our population is aging—by 2034, the US will have more people over 65 than under 18. Despite the evidence that climate change is severely impacting older adults, and the reality that communities will be confronted with more frequent and more severe disasters, communities are generally not prepared to address the needs of older adults in the face of a changing climate. My book makes the case that we cannot achieve true resilience until communities adopt interventions that work to meet the needs of their oldest residents. When we plan for those most impacted by climate, and for those with the greatest obstacles to opportunity and well-being, we improve conditions for all. I am proud to serve on the board of this grassroots, pedal-powered advocacy organization that fights for better policy and more funding for bike/ped infrastructure, supports the creation of bicycle-friendly communities (and businesses and universities), and trains thousands of people across the US each year to be smart cyclists.

Leading a team of dedicated policy experts, and informed by NHT experts in lending, development and resident services, I work to advance solutions that deliver more safe, resilient and affordable housing.

I'm proud to serve on the board of the nation's premiere organization for local, state and federal action to advance equity, sustainability and resilience through better community design and policy.

In this new role (for AARP and for me), I lead our efforts to strengthen and align advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels to create more livable communities. With a team of expert legislative representatives, I support our 53 state offices to implement better housing, transportation, public space, utilities, and broadband policies at the state and local level -- and contribute to AARP's efforts to advocate for stronger federal policies to drive downstream impact and create great places for people of all ages. I also serve as co-chair for our Disaster Management Community of Practice, which coordinates AARP efforts to build our capacity to enhance community resilience, and reduce risk to older adults resulting from extreme weather and natural disasters.

To respond to the changing demographics of our country and our world, I led programming-related efforts within AARP and through our 53 state offices to create housing, transportation, and public spaces that better serve older adults and contribute to great places for all. I managed a stellar team that distributes best-in-class technical assistance to communities; delivers dynamic national Livable Communities conferences attracting 500-800 practitioners each; developed and disseminated award-winning publications and digital resources, including a weekly eNewsletter reaching more than 110,000 local leaders; and managed our Network of Age Friendly States and Communities with >500 jurisdictions and eight states committing to better development. I led strategic partnerships and fundraising with national leaders in placemaking, active transportation, innovative housing solutions, equity, and economic development to support our work and extend our reach. I served as issue expert on enterprise-wide efforts to award more than $6 million in microgrants (2018-2020) to implement locally-driven change in communities, and as thought-leader on AARP-wide efforts to shape future direction in housing (2019) and transportation (2020). I represented AARP at national and international events as keynote speaker and panelist, and served as the voice of AARP's Livable Communities work in media interviews, podcasts, and broadcasts. Our efforts lead to real, tangible community-based projects on the ground, broader community engagement in land use decision making, and stronger local and state policy -- all of which support communities to work towards a more resilient, sustainable, and age-friendly future that better serves the needs of all.

We promote the sport of ultimate frisbee -- and its core values of 'spirit of the game', peaceful conflict resolution, and inclusiveness -- throughout Arlington and the DMV area. We host one of the largest HS ultimate tournaments on the East Coast each spring, and support Arlington Public Schools by expanding play as an all-year sport for middle and high schoolers.

Managed HUD's Office of Economic Resilience, which supports HUD-wide efforts to help communities and regions make more sustainable, coordinated investments that reduce energy consumption, preserve land, make housing and transportation more affordable, enable more equitable access to jobs and services, and build climate resilience. OER (and later OED) provided agency-wide program support on a number of technical subjects: community engagement, infrastructure, disaster mitigation, water/energy efficiency, financing, land use planning, regional accessibility, building design, performance measurement, and health. We also employed innovative approaches that, when utilized, helped communities make more effective and strategic investments of HUD dollars; supported stronger and more diverse economic development; expanded investment in high-performing buildings and infrastructure; promoted improved access to housing, jobs, and educational opportunities, particularly at the regional level; and thrive in the face of future risks. My roles included: serving as co-lead for design and implementation of National DIsaster Resilience Competition which awarded $1 billion in CDBG-DR funds; served as agency lead for HUD-DOT-EPA Partnership for Sustainable Communities which coordinated investments across agencies and facilitated $250 million in Sustainable Communities grants (which my office implemented); and served as staff lead for both the Climate Resilience and Preparedness Task Force led by CEQ and HUD's own Climate Council, both of which sought to incorporate climate resilience measures into a broad range of federal activities.
