Established in May 2019, the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) is an arms-length organization housed within Global Affairs Canada that reviews complaints about possible human rights abuses by Canadian companies operating outside Canada in the garment, mining, and oil and gas sectors.- Managed the investigative process for the CORE’s first open-source review into the use of Uyghur forced labour in the operations of a Canadian mining company and drafted the CORE’s corresponding investigation report in which the Ombud found that a human rights abuse had occurred. - Coordinate and manage complex public procurement processes related to the CORE’s investigations, including by developing a long-term public procurement strategy for managing investigative work. - Create and lead in the development of internal processes and procedures for the CORE’s investigation work that adhere to the United Nations Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) effectiveness criteria for non-judicial grievance mechanisms. - Conduct legal research and analysis on international human rights law, with a particular focus on applying the UNGPs and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and related guidance. - Liaise and coordinate across teams, both internal and external to the CORE, to ensure effective and efficient implementation of deliverables. - Manage a team of one by coaching and developing staff to deliver effective, efficient, and sustainable results.
