Marion Island

Intensive monitoring of killer whale, elephant seal and fur seal populations on remote subantarctic Marion Island, often in extreme weather conditions and under physically demanding and mentally challenging conditions.• Marion killer whale work: Data collection during dedicated shore-based observations (up to 10 hours in summer) and opportunistic sightings, collection of biopsies and deployment of satellite tags with the use of a crossbow, sample processing, photo-identification, data entry, database management, equipment maintenance and report writing.• Pinniped work: Data collection involved hiking far distances (up to 37 km a day) over difficult terrain for routine census work (tag resights), tagging, pup weigh, photogrammetry projects, scat collection, assistance with satellite deployments and pit tagging, collection of whiskers, fur, biopsies and blood and disentanglements. Assisted with data entry.• South African killer whale work: Recording and collating of all killer whale sightings across southern Africa between 2010 and 2021 from research vessels, collaboraters, social media and opportunistic sightings, photo identification and drafting a national catalogue. Plettenberg Bay

• Developed and led dedicated boat-based surveys to collect photo-identification data on the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin in Plettenberg Bay, including skippering of a 9m butt cat seagoing research vessel.• Managed and led data collection for various research and monitoring projects, including data collection from boat-based whale watching vessels and a research project on Chacma baboons.• Acted as an agent for the Port Elizabeth Museum to respond to marine mammal strandings and perform necropsies as part of the Plettenberg Bay Stranding Network.• Trained and supervised a dedicated field assistant and teams of international volunteers. • Coordinated daily research activities and prepared weekly and monthly work schedules. • Liaised with relevant conservation and municipal authorities during routine fieldwork and marine mammal stranding response activities. • Responsible for sample collection, processing, data collection, database management, preliminary analyses and scientific report writing. • Performed public engagement in the field, via social media, the press and documentary film shoots.• Presented at national conferences and attended workshops.
