Backwoods Food Mfg., Inc. started as a part-time business attempting to develop a line of food products from my own recipes. Beginning a new product line was extremely challenging and my line never quite made it to the market, however, because of the heavy solicitation from others in the business who wanted me to manufacture their product lines, the industry eventually led me into the co-packing business, manufacturing food products for other companies. This business overlapped my employment at the Oklahoma Small Business Development Center until November of 2002 when Backwoods Foods expanded and became a full-time food manufacturing facility. Since then, Backwoods Foods has grown from a very small co-packing effort into a premier food manufacturing company in Oklahoma, manufacturing for over 50 companies and shipping product all over the United States. Our latest expansion in November of 2014 was to a custom-designed multi-million dollar facility in the Tahlequah Business and Industry Park.

The Oklahoma Small Business Development Center is a network of SBA/State funded offices that assisted business owners and prospective business owners in accomplishing their entrepreneurship goals. As Regional Director, I managed the staff of three regional offices and several outreach locations. My experience with the OSBDC prepared me for the world of entrepreneurship by acting in an advisory capacity to those who were in business.
