Illustrator and creative thinker Danielle Dey specialises in Children’s picture books and creates warm, vibrant, and striking drawings. Danielle is always looking for new ways to develop her practice through different, distinctive ways of working. Danielle works in black Indian ink to keep her illustrations fresh and full of texture, then scans them in to add colour on Photoshop. This technique is what makes her work have a painterly feel, with the convenience of working digitally.Danielle studied Undergraduate Illustration at the University of Central Lancashire between 2018 to 2021. She achieved a First Class grade with honors, and overcame the challenges of a pandemic during her studies to work on finding her way of working in her creative practice and overcame hardship while keeping a positive attitude and remaining self-motivated. Further perusing her passions, Danielle followed her Undergraduate course with a Masters in Children's Book Illustration, in which she has been awarded a Distinction grade. During her MA, Danielle produced a full-colour, 32 page illustration picture book which she showcased at her degree show. Bear’s Treasure follows the story of a Bear who sets out on an adventure to leave his cave, he interacts with other animal characters who have their own collections. It is ultimately a fictional story with non-fiction elements, such as stamp collecting. However, it has themes of sharing, friendship, and discovery. Following her childlike curiosity and fascination with collecting, Danielle pursued this project following a personal passion and discovered that while there are a lot of established children’s books about collecting, there is a gap in the market for a book about this topic that has a character driven narrative. Alongside her studies, Danielle has also worked as a Retail Merchandiser for the company Dee Set. This has developed Danielle's character into someone who is very self-motivated and disciplined, with a positive mindset. She has gained experience in sales and customer service, as well as strengthening her creative practice and knowledge. In both settings, she has been able to multi-task and communicate efficiently to ensure everything runs smoothly. Danielle's studies and job have taught her how to keep a good balance of work, social life and creative practice.
