In September 2024, I joined Help Clinic Canada as a student therapist to complete the clinical practicum requirement of my MSW program.

- Develop of a trusting and therapeutic relationship with the individual and the community;- Screen and assess, and refer clients to external professional counselling services;- Provide “brief intervention” to clients requiring mental health counselling services;- Teaching of living skills, social skills and parenting skills (if applicable) through role modeling or appropriate behaviour and be able to assess client deficits and strengths and use systematic plans of instruction, teaching methods and approaches to transfer information and skill to participants;- Counseling skills that utilize problem-solving, de-escalation, goal-setting and preventative interventions with clients in either a 1:1 or group scenario;- Provide follow-up to individuals returning from treatment and ensure ongoing follow-up care and counselling through collaborating with external mental health counsellors;- Plan, organize and/or develop, and facilitate and/or implement home-based and culturally relevant mental health prevention and promotion programming within the program;

• Works as part of an interdisciplinary team to promote a therapeutic environment.• Provides interventions to individuals and groups of offenders in a correctional environment. • Provides support to women in crisis.• Provides specialized intervention and support services to female inmates with diverse addiction and mental health issues.• Facilitates programming tailored to the offenders’ correctional plan, documenting inmate progress.

• Develop positive relations with youth through the process of positive role modeling and mentoring. • Ensure basic needs of youth are met.• Practice in accordance with Canadian Accreditation Council standards.• Aid youth in developing their individual strengths, and support them in exploring their culture. • Act as a liaison between youth and the school, medical and legal systems. • Develop personalized service plans while ensuring client files are up to date. • Provide direct supervision to support staff.• Create programming to teach youth the importance of life skills and resiliency.

• Provided advanced level clinical assessment of client and family issues for youth charged with offenses under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.• Identifies=d adjustment issues, strengths, coping strategies, social and community supports available.• Gathered collateral information from Addiction and Mental Health service providers, Children Services, probation, schools and other involved professionals.• Developed social work care plan to reduce criminal recidivism and improve mental health.• Incorporated client and family needs, and client/family goals where possible.• Provided advanced range of therapies such as individual, family, group, behaviour modification, and others to reduce recidivism and the various harms caused by criminal behaviour.• Collaborated with staff within the program(s), with other Addiction and Mental Health services and with community partners for clinical consultations.

After completing my research for Dr. Sandy Jung, I began working as a research assistant in the Psychology Crime Lab at MacEwan University. My role here was to code cases of intimate partner violence and stalking for a student in the Honours Program completing her thesis, for interrater reliability purposes. This role entailed being familiar with and able to understand the Edmonton Police Reporting and Occurrence System (EPROS), and databases such as the Justice Online Information Network (JOIN) and the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) systems. Coding examined the recidivism of the offender, and the frequency of reoffending.
