About Danielle Einstein

Dr Danielle Einstein is an Adjunct Fellow of Macquarie University specialising in anxiety and technology use. She is also a practicing Clinical Psychologist in Sydney. She is known for her research on social media use and anxiety. She was an expert at the two social media summits in Australia, and quoted in the Former Chief Justice of Australia’s report into social media use (September, 2024). She has played a key role in the Australian debate by educating NSW and South Australian Advisers and been invited to Parliament House twice to speak with government and media in support of new regulation. Dr Einstein's research has examined whether school programs could affect social media use. A report from the Insights project was submitted to the 2018 Non Educational use of mobile devices in NSW schools Review, in which Danielle was quoted. She was the first Australian Clinical Psychologist to call for a phone ban. In 2019, Dr Einstein wrote: The Dip with a video which explains the dopamine dip (available for schools and practitioners).Dr Einstein has continued to contribute to projects that aim to help adolescent's technology use with artistic initiatives including Bell Shakespeare and Alex Lykos Entertainment (who created the 2023 Australian documentary, Disconnect Me).In 2023, Dr Einstein had a study published based on 6 Australian schools which showed how social media use is associated with anxiety in some students but not in others in 13 to 15 years. Danielle has led a research project to examine the ability of school programs to influence anxiety and social media use with Professor Ron Rapee (Macquarie University), Professor Peter McEvoy, Professor Warren Mansell (Curtin University), Professor Maree Abbott (University of Sydney), Dr Anne McMaugh, Dr Eyal Karin (Macquarie University) and Dr Madeleine Ferrari (Australian Catholic University).Danielle takes a pragmatic approach to social media and technology use. She was invited to deliver the 2023 Professor Margot Pryor Lecture to the Australian Clinical Psychology Association in which she called for psychologists to ensure assessment and treatment of device use was prioritised in treatment. She educates school communities, psychologists, paediatricians and medical practitioners to expand their understanding of what is needed in practice. And in 2024, Dr Einstein developed a program to combat the rise of anxiety in Australia and New Zealand with Dr Judith Locke, Clinical Psychologist. Their book "Raising Anxiety: Why our good intentions are backfiring on children (and how to fix it)" is out.
