I went back to Home Health care for a more flexible schedule for my kids. The geographical area was smaller than Columbia and the driving was not that bad. By this time, they had transitioned to computers or tablets and were charting our assessments in the computer system. I was able to fully understand the new computer system fairly quickly and was able to start training new employees.

I eventually got the opportunity to transfer again within the department to the NHC faciity in my hometown and current town I was living in. The commute was very short and that was very appealing. This facility was bigger and the regional office was located in the building. I again was the charge nurse of the other halls and responsible for my own hall which was a rehab hall. This is where I discovered that I might be interested in a career in nursing informatics when they made me a super user for the new computer system being introduced to the facility. I attended the super user classes and assisted my employees in learning the ins and outs of the computer system. By this time, I had used several computer systems (except for Home Health and at that time, we were still using paper charting). After assisting the employees at my current facility, I assisted the sister facility in the next town over while they were transitioning to the new computer system as well. It was an exiting experience for me and I discovered my love for learning new computer systems and being able to teach others.

I was able to transfer within the NHC company and went from Home Health to Long term care. I was the head nurse in charge of the rehab department. I was the only RN in the building on weekend nights. I was responsible for passing bedtime medications to my rehab patients and assisting my CNA and the LPN of the other hall.

I thoroughly enjoyed home health, however the drive was horrendous and was unable to manage as a single mom. I was the admissions RN and had a fairly large geographic area that I covered to see my patients while in the home setting. Developed autonomy and extra skills that I have not had to do in the hospital setting.
