    My project focused on nutrient utilization of embryonic stem cells and how nutrients influence differentiation to heart cells (cardiomyocytes) or blood vessels (endothelial cells). I generated embryonic stem cell lines with inducible knockdown of metabolic stress signaling kinase, AMPK. These cells were used to examine AMPK signaling regulation in mitochondrial metabolism and during directed differentiation of stem cells to cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells. My studies used many skills essential to molecular and cell biology including molecular cloning, PCR, rt-PCR, microscopy, and protein expression/activity assays, to name a few. Furthermore, I designed experiments, wrote grants, and took time to train and help students move forward with their studies.
