As an online instructor I have taught a diverse number of students who are anywhere from 17 to 70 years old. And I’ve taught them a variety of courses: composition, American literature, advanced research writing, advanced report writing, and advanced technical writing. My philosophy is the same for all, and it should support any university learning objectives. I take full advantage of media to reach all students’ learning types: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Online teaching lends itself to all types of media, which keeps the classroom open, active, and student centered. Because students learn through teaching themselves and each other as well as by observing a valid model, I motivate them by example to be responsible, to evaluate themselves and their work, and to collaborate. Finally, the first two techniques allow students to enter into an understanding of and to advance their skills with critical thinking.
