As the High Adventure Directory at YMCA Camp Cherokee summer camp, I oversee the many moving parts of the program, as well as ensuring the safety of every participant. During my time as a nanny in the United Kingdom, in my spare time I connected with the Grassroots Project, who quickly took me in to their family.The Grassroots Project (in Egham) is a sustainable, local organization that provides care and leisure services for adults with learning disabilities. More than providing their members with an inviting, engaging way to spend their day, Grassroots teaches life skills through garden based learning. Members tend the garden, cook meals from fresh foods, and have hands on team projects to maintain the facility.On my weekly visits, I supported members during life skills activities, chaperoned off-site trips, and assisted with physical tasks such as gardening.
