In this research lab, we studied the relationship between affective disorders, PTSD and anxiety specifically, and autonomic cardiovascular control. To this end, I conducted in-lab assessments, which included taking various blood pressure measurements, administering clinically-relevant questionnaires, and applying 36-hour EKG leads to research participants. I processed, edited, analyzed, recorded, and summarized these data into appropriate databases and into write-ups throughout my time here. Maintaining general lab organization, supplies, and scheduling of participants was within my scope as well.

Student researcher assessing health needs of refugee families in Durham, NC. • Co-led refugee focus group to understand difficulties faced when accessing health care. I helped to translate and interprete audio from francophone focus group and organized it into qualitative memo to understand themes in relation to other focus groups conducted. Collaborated on survey sent to health service organizations to understand difficulties in providing health care to refugees. Co-wrote results report sent to organizations to improve health-providers’ methods. Research was subsequently presented at Duke Bass Connections Fair (awarded Best Poster) and North American Refugee Health Conference (Seattle, WA 2018).

Researched and co-taught curriculum for 6-week-long kids’ culinary camp to support kids aged 7-15 in preparing diverse, healthy foods in fun, safe kitchen environment. Co-wrote and designed weekly blog to promote and highlight camp events. Participated in weekly discussions with various organization leaders to deepen understanding of form of work and impact in an underserved community.
