About Danielle Mulligan
I am a dedicated and strategic leader working at the intersection of research, policy, and social justice with a focus on urban policy. Experienced in setting and evaluating organizational goals, managing staff, and growing impact.——I have long been committed to understanding and advocating for what makes cities work -- and how they could work better. As an undergraduate, I developed my own major to explor the interplay between education, sustainability, and health in cities, and practical solutions that account for the complexity of these social challenges. After gaining experience in affordable housing and policy, at The Community Builders and the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN) respectively, I returned to Tufts for my Master's in Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning. The applied nature of my graduate coursework and my Rappaport Public Policy Fellowship deepened my commitment to bridging research and policy. These experiences culminated in my multi-year thesis, a Youth Participatory Action Research project exploring the ways that young people in East Boston perceive and respond to gentrification in their neighborhood. While completing my master’s degree, I was promoted to SSN's first Associate Director of Chapters. In this role, and my next role, as SSN's Director of Member Engagement, I worked to mobilize researchers across the country to leverage their research for policy impact. I am thrilled to have joined the Boston University Initiative on Cities in 2023 to continue bridging academic knowledge with policy and practice, and to further equity in cities around the world.
