I currently lead a team of 8 Nurse Consultants in the Occupational Disease (OD) and Survivor Benefits program. This team handles a broad spectrum of occupational disease claims from hand arm vibration syndrome to many long latency cancer diagnoses. Some of the most valuable work they do is supporting terminally ill workers with palliative and end of life support. This is holistic in nature, often including the entire family. Nurse consultants also support the OD adjudicators clarify compatibility, identify permanent impairments and assist in determining maximum medical recovery dates. In my 20+ years with WSIB working in OD has been the most rewarding work experience yet.

Interacting with Workers, Health Care Providers, Employers, WSIB Case Managers and other WSIB staff aimed at optimizing outcomes. The role involved making and communicating health-care decisions, as well as participating in the WSIB structured case management framework, which guided my work and enabled the achievement of high-quality return-to-work and/or recovery outcomes for injured/ill workers. To this end, I used computer-based programs and the telephone queue frequently throughout the work day. The majority of my injured worker clients worked in the construction and transportation fields. They often sustained severe injuries, such as fractures, burns and amputations, which often required coordinating care and community services to ensure optimal RTW and recovery.
