Responsible for managing the technicians and work undertaken within Gardline's geotechnical laboratory, and supporting the growth of the testing capabilities of the laboratory.

In this role I ensure that the laboratory management system complies with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and that testing is carried out in accordance with BS 1377:1990, as well as relevant ASTM standards. I carry out internal audits of the laboratory’s quality system and testing procedures and ensure that any necessary corrective actions are performed in a timely manner, these findings are then discussed in the yearly management review. As well as making sure that the policies and procedures of the laboratory are compliant and of a high standard, I thoroughly check the test results to ensure that the data the client receives is to the level of quality that is expected. In addition to this, I continue to carry out the tasks I was undertaking as Laboratory Technician and Administrator.

I split my time between laboratory testing and office work. In the laboratory I carry out onshore soil classification testing to BS, ASTM and NORSOK, and have been observed by UKAS auditors performing Particle Density by Small Pyknometer and Determination of pH. As well as laboratory testing, I carry out equipment calibrations and performance checks in accordance with in-house procedures. Another of my roles is training other technicians, ensuringe that they perform tests in accordance with specifications and check that they know all of the crucial test details.When working in the office I have a number of different roles. Working from testing schedules and sample logs, I enter information into our test management database and generate the test sheets required by the laboratory staff. I spend a lot of time entering, processing and checking data before sending it for approval. Once the data has been approved, I then report the data. If required I write and amend both test and calibration procedures and create calibration worksheets. I am responsible for creating and maintaining registers for approved suppliers, sub-contractors and external calibration services, as well as a list of all controlled documents.As well as dealing with the in-house laboratory testing I also liaise with our approved sub-contractors, ensuring that they receive samples and schedules with enough time for them to carry out testing and send results to our laboratory in time for us to meet our own deadlines. Other responsibilities include sourcing and ordering laboratory equipment and consumables when required and general administrative tasks such as archiving.I have temporarily taken on the role of Laboratory Quality Manager and assisted in an audit of the laboratory. In accordance with the findings, I implemented a streamlined training process and created calibration training records. I am also in the process of creating a manual for offshore laboratory technicians to use on vessels.

I worked as a labourer for my father in his flooring company, which mainly consisted of carrying materials and tools from the vehicle to the job site, and clearing up the mess as we went along.
